Issues with Yum Documentation

DC
Darcy Christ

Hi,

I am new to CollectionSpace and the community. I have had several issues installing CS on Centos following: https://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/DOC/Installing+on+Yum+Compatible+Linux+Distributions https://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/DOC/Installing+on+Yum+Compatible+Linux+Distributions

I’ve been using the Ubuntu one (https://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/DOC/Installing+on+Ubuntu+14.04 https://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/DOC/Installing+on+Ubuntu+14.04) to do things not specified in the Yum one. Perhaps there needs to be an installation that is not OS specific.

It turns out it is out of date–yes, I do see the notice, but that does not help.

What can I do to help improve the documentation for others?

Regards,
Darcy

Darcy,

Welcome to the CollectionSpace community.  If you haven't already, register for an account on the CollectionSpace wiki here:

https://wiki.collectionspace.org/signup.action

Once you're registered, I'll make sure you have edit permissions for the wiki pages that you'd like to make changes to.  If you're not comfortable making the edits/changes directly to the wiki page, feel free to send the edits/changes to me and I'll add them myself.

Another option would be to create a JIRA issue(s) with the edits/changes/corrections you'd like to see.  You can signup for a JIRA account here:

https://issues.collectionspace.org/secure/Signup!default.jspa

Feel free to keep the questions coming.

-Richard

Hi Darcy,

Thanks, as well, for your interest in seeing the Yum install docs get
updated! As Richard mentioned, even adding notes about where the docs were
outdated/inaccurate to a new JIRA issue would be very helpful. And you're
most welcome to dive right in and make outright corrections, too!

A related place where time and energy would be greatly appreciated,
whether on your part or that of any other member(s) of the community, is in
working on the Puppet-based automated installer
https://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/DOC/Automated+installer+for+CollectionSpace
to install CollectionSpace on long-lived CentOS distributions (with their
ten-year support lifecycle).

Currently, that installer only works on Ubuntu 14.04.x. There's
scaffolding in place to install on CentOS 7, and installs under that OS
were working for CollectionSpace v4.2 (e.g., CSPACE-6721
https://issues.collectionspace.org/browse/CSPACE-6721.) But it's likely
been a while since anyone has looked at updating this, so it can also be
used to install v4.4.

When we get that working, installing on CentOS would then take just a few
commands and a few minutes of a human's time - the rest of the install
would be entirely automated and run unattended.

Thanks,
Aron

Great. Thanks. I’ve created an account with this email address.

It may take me a bit to make the changes. I am still learning the system and I still do not have a working version of CollectionSpace :(

Thanks so much, Darcy! (And no worries. Just let us know of any followup
questions you might have in getting CSpace installed.)
