Just had a serious engine guy on board in Seattle who is the main man here
to look at my main, gen, wing, for any problems to be found before the big
trip soon. I'm replacing most of coolant hoses on the main, and taking on
only two spares on his recommendation, slave solenoid for the starter motor,
and a 24VDC/40A starter battery charging alternator. The alternator is a bit
pussy in his view.
The revelation is this. Millions of farmers with tractors and lots of
fishermen around the world have refined the John Deere and Lugger engines I
have on board to make them virtually bullet proof. The main alternator I
have is used in millions of trucks around the world and designed to do 200k
hours. Farmers, fishermen, and truckies can become angry if their rig
doesn't work - I'm therefore a lucky beneficiary of what's gone before.
I have a friend with a Nordhavn 76 who had his trip interrupted to the
Carribean recently by having to call into NY and replace one of his engines.
The boat is 4 years old, the engine is German, and never been in a tractor.
I rest my case.

Not sure what you are saying. Are you saying that because you have a certain
alternator which is also used by farmers and truckers, your engine is bullet
proof? What is the brand and size of this alternator? Did it come on the
engine from the factory or distributor this way? I guess that your friend
has an MTU engine. Since MTU bought the off-road division of Detroit Diesel
from Chrysler, that boat really has an American-made Detroit Diesel whose
base engine is found in many products.
