Hello Hypnosis Club Members,
In an old hypnosis cartoon, a man is lying flat on his back and floating
above a sofa. He says to the hypnotist, “I don’t think I am hypnotized.”
Most people are hypnotized many times before they realize that they have
been hypnotized. Enjoy this new article!
Signs of Hypnosis by Vance Romane
A positive sign of hypnosis occurring includes remaining practically
motionless, hardly moving at all during the hypnosis session. Over the
years, many newspaper reporters sat in on my hypnosis seminars. As they
just wanted to write a story and not be hypnotized, it became difficult for
them to sit still for so long. The noisiest reporters wore corduroy slacks.
Every time they shifted one leg over the other, I could plainly hear a
whooshing sound in the quiet, darkened room while many people were
experiencing hypnosis. Hypnotised people usually are so focused upon the
hypnotist’s words that they do not even think about moving. They may be
highly sensitive to all sounds around, but especially the voice of the
hypnotist.
Another positive sign is when the client is told to exit the hypnosis, “to
come back to the room” at the count of 5. People doing well will either
start moving during the count or, even better exit hypnosis *exactly *at
the count of 5. Some people with good responses remember everything, while
others remember only parts or absolutely nothing of what happened. All
those responses are fine. Another good indication of hypnosis is not caring
either way when eyelids feel very heavy and close. Another positive sign is
increased salivation, when suggested or shortly after being suggested by
the hypnotist.
It is common to have a feeling of not being hypnotized or “feeling
conscious”, yet not wanting to get up; wanting to get up but thoroughly
enjoying the hypnosis and remaining seated; or simply not being conscious
while hypnotized or just feeling so deeply relaxed, almost unable to get up
… it just feels too good to bother getting up. The eyeballs may be more
red. People doing well with hypnosis often say that their mind never
wandered or only occasionally wandered. It is that powerful focus upon the
voice of the hypnotist that brings the welcomed changes in mindset,
feelings, and actions all for the better. After hypnosis, people are often
excitedly anticipating and looking forward to being hypnotized another
time.
Some people are hypnotized in seconds. Some take longer. It depends largely
upon how relaxed the person is; the extent to which they follow
instructions; the method of hypnotizing chosen; the skill of the hypnotist;
the desire to be hypnotized; a reason to be hypnotized; trust of the
hypnotist; a willingness to be hypnotized; imagination ability and more.
Another factor is the extent to which a person completely imagines the
suggestions of the hypnotist as 100% true, imagining everything as very
real.
Watch children imagining a tea party, drinking from the empty cups, eating
imaginary food. While hypnotized, imagining what you want to happen in your
life as already having occurred is much more powerful than simply
consciously thinking about being successful.
For example, the hypnotist may start by teaching the client to follow
instructions while training his imagination and concentration with a simple
locking hands together experience. The hypnotist requests the hands to
clasped together and the client begins working with the hypnotist as a
team. They become one, “en rapport”. The hypnotist tells the client that
his hands are stuck, glued, like the jaws of a steel vise. The client
imagines the hands are no longer bone, flesh, and blood, but locked with
crazy glue; like cold steel with the vise handle turned tighter and tighter.
The client does not say to themselves, “this is silly, there is no glue.
These are hands, not cold steel.” They do not keep thinking “I wonder if I
am hypnotized? Is it working? I hope I am in hypnosis. When will I be
hypnotized? This has got to work. This better work. It’s my last resort!”
That divides the concentration and would be doomed to failure. The
hypnotist teaches the person how to stop the “monkey mind” and to focus
upon his voice, becoming involved in imagining what the hypnotist tells
him. He is supposed to focus on: his breathing, his body relaxing, certain
images, sights, sounds, feelings, etc.
Suggested and imagined experiences such as locking eyelids together,
falling forwards or backwards, a stiff arm, a floating arm and so on all
help to develop hypnotic skills of “letting go” and having fun, *enjoying *the
power of their own mind. It is also practice following the hypnotist’s
suggestions for whatever problem or challenge is to be overcome. Most
anyone can be hypnotized. Some go fast, some go slow, but we go into
hypnosis, whether it is daydreaming or following the words of another.
In your own life, what people have been your accidental hypnotists that had
a great influence upon you? Your parents, an older sibling, a teacher, a
counselor, a minister, a physician, a close friend, a celebrity, a certain
book, a movie, a spouse, a guru. Gee, you are you. Sometimes their waking
hypnosis suggestions are beneficial, sometimes not.
World recognized hypnosis expert Dr. Milton Erickson shares this patient
story: “Now after 29 years of terrible anti-social behavior on Joe’s part,
and 23-year-old Edie said, ‘You can if you’re a gentleman’-and that was
Joe’s psychotherapy. For 29 years of sociopathic behavior and Joe became a
farm man, a totally different man. And when you look over society, how many
a man is ruined by being rejected by a girl, was reformed by a girl saying,
‘Yes.’ And how many people have some little incident in their life that
determines how they will live.” Right words, right time.
With powerful and focused concentration created with planned therapeutic
hypnosis suggestions, change is faster, and stronger than most waking
suggestion. The hypnotist motivates and changes thoughts, feeling and
behavior for the desired benefits. One method is by direct
suggestions/instructions from the hypnotist. A second method is a *regression
*to the start of the problem years ago, and now as an adult to understand
and reframe that event in a new light. A third method occurs when the
hypnotherapist guides the client’s subconscious to explore their own past
experiences, learning and skills in the file cabinet of their mind. The
subconscious often reveals the best solution for the problem. Dr. Milton
Erickson is well known for “Trust your unconscious; it knows more than you
do”.
For all time, you are unique. Love yourself. Believe in yourself. Building
self-esteem is all powerful for happiness and success in all areas of
life.
