Cell phones and REAL phones -- on your boat

Remember back on April 3, I posted a message (RE: Cellular phones and the
internet) about the Motorola analog equipment I was using to connect to the
Internet via cell phone from the boat?  I got to thinking about the
Motorola adapter box and the fact that it presents a dial tone to the
computer modem and uses the same kind of connector your home phones use.  I
wondered if MAYBE, I could connect a regular house-type phone to that port
and use it just like a regular phone -- run extensions throughout the boat
so they could all use the cell phone when we're away from our slip (and
could even be switched over to a land line, if desired, when we're at the
slip).

I just tried it out AND IT WORKS!  If the cell phone rings, you just pick
up an extension and talk away.  Hang it up normally when you finish.  The
only difference is that when you dial the number on the extension, you have
to "flash" the hook switch briefly to have the cell phone send the number
out to the cell system.  Otherwise, it's JUST like the phones at home.  I
think I'll even put an extension in the engine room so I won't have to bust
my noggin getting to the phone when I'm twisted up behind the genset and up
to my armpits in diesel fuel or something.  Way cool!

I'll just paralle the computer with the extensions.  My guess that this
arrangement will also let the computer answer an incoming fax call -- AND
maybe even use an answering machine on the cell phone, since the ringer
works through that port as well.  REALLY way cool!
