Joe's commentary is doubly interesting. On this trip I was running with both
paper charts and ENS. In this area, there are many islands and islets, and
from a mile away not only do they all look alike, it's often impossible to
distinguish one from another or to see the passages that paper charts
suggest should be obvious. With ENS showing the boat's location and
direction, all of that (potential) confusion is instantly eliminated. And,
there is no doubt where the rock, reefs, shoals, etc are. On top of that,
you can instantly report position with extraordinary precision.
Yes, I know from my nav courses that I should be running a plot, but the
simple fact is, I'd rather be 1) looking out for all the deadheads in these
waters, and 2) enjoying the fabulous scenery which is the reason we're out
there in the first place. With ENS, you've got the best of all worlds.
Cheers, Garrett
Is ENS available for the Sea of Cortez? I can't locate a good chart program for
that area in West Marine catalog.
