Henry-

Have the skipper check all of the electrical cable connections to the
controls, both in the engineroom and on deck.  The ZF units have
Deutsch-type multi-pin connectors with large protective boots.
Sometimes the connectors are not completely snapped home before the
boots are pushed up to cover the connectors.

Also tight cable-tying and routing of the cables from the connectors,
while appearing shipshape, can put lateral forces on the connectors and
break or cause intermittent connectivity.  Especially when the
engineroom heats and things move.  Been there, had the problem, both
with ZF and stabilizer cabling.
