Hi Thomas,
I'm using the frequency 955MHz corresponding to the ARFCN number 100 that i
gave in the openBTS.config file. The GSM band is 900. My nokia phones are
not able to detect the signal.
Today I had a progress in the project. I gave the MCC=001 and MNC=01 in
the openbts.config file (i.e. in the test mode) and one samsung mobile is
able to detect the signal from USRP2 but not able to register to it. Do you
know the reason why its not registering??
Thank you,
Madhuri.

If phones are able to see the BTS signal then the problem may be with the
Asterisk server.
Did you install Asterisk ? If yes then in the same machine or in the
different machine ?
You need to provide the IP address of Asterisk in OpenBTS.config file for
'Asterisk.IP' field.
(127.0.0.1 if installed locally otherwise remote IP address)

First of all what do you mean by not registering? you try to select the network and the cell phone isn't able to connect? or you just can't make phone calls? first of all, you have to take into account that phones work in very strange ways, something like you experienced with samsung mobiles seeing the network and other ones not is quite normal specially if you have operators networks present. The best way to test OpenBTS is to check it in a place with no other network, but I know this is not allways possible. Secondly, there is a line in the openbts.config (Control.OpenRegistration) which should be present. But as I have told you it may be a problem of the phone, from my experience Blackberrys work very well with OpenBTS but they are not allways available.

These are normal messages. The SETRXGAIN warning will go away if you
update your copy of OpenBTS. What frequency are you operating on, and
is it supported by your phone? Have you read this page?

You should not have to change any ports in your config file. The USRP2
connected on 192.168.10.2 is independent of the address and port
settings in OpenBTS.

It says "UHD_003.001.000-unknown" does it have any significance?? I
installed UHD-003.001.000 images. Could you suggest me any specific mobile
to use? And the difficulties in registering to OpenBTS?? And is this got to
to anything with the external clock of 10MHz to the employed??? As of now
i'm just using the internal clock...
Please do reply,
Thank you,
Madhuri :)

Subject: Re: [USRP-users] OpenBTS-UHD with USRP2
To: Thomas Tsou ttsou@vt.edu
Hi Thomas,
I'm using the frequency 955MHz corresponding to the ARFCN number 100 that
i gave in the openBTS.config file.
Thank you,
Madhuri.

I dont understnd the port configeration in the OPenBTS.config file. my
has an IP address of 192.168.10.2. So pleaseeee accordingly tell me
all i need to change the IP addresses in the config file (if any). As i
told USRP2 is properly connected and seen in the spectrometer.
You should not have to change any ports in your config file. The USRP2
connected on 192.168.10.2 is independent of the address and port
settings in OpenBTS.

We need to narrow down to issue. After looking at the Asterisk log, it looks
to be working correctly.
Coming to BTS side, can you set the logging level from INFO to DEBUG in
OpenBTS.Config file to
get the exact error log. Here are some pointers for this issue-
1.I would advise you to use an external 10Mhz clock from any signal
generator instead of using internal
one. Internal clock gives the issue of Frequency drift where the BTS
downlink signalling keeps on drifting
from the original frequency.
-
I also suggest not to configure the BTS in the same BAND as local
operators. If local operators use GSM
900 band, configure BTS to 1800 band or vice versa. Otherwise you need to
use a RF shield box make your
phone do not see the local operator's signal. Phones look for highest signal
strength and report them. If local
carriers have strong signal, mostly they will be reported before the BTS one
when Manual search is done.
-
Try connecting two antennas on USRP2. One on TX/RX and other on RX2.
Otherwise you need to use a
terminator if you want to work with a single Antenna. In my case this was
the important problem as cell phone
used to lose sync with the BTS very often until I put two antennas.
-
What happens when you see the BTS signal and ask the phone to select it
manually ? Do you see any
SIP registration request triggered from OpenBTS to Asterisk ? I assume you
are not able to reach upto this
stage and hence your problem can be resolved by following above 3 points.
I use Nokia 5300 Express Music, some old Nokia Phones and Google Android
phones for my use.

You need to provide the IP address of Asterisk in OpenBTS.config file for
'Asterisk.IP' field.
(127.0.0.1 if installed locally otherwise remote IP address)

To: Thomas Tsou ttsou@vt.edu
Hi Thomas,
I'm using the frequency 955MHz corresponding to the ARFCN number 100
that i gave in the openBTS.config file. The GSM band is 900. My nokia phones
are not able to detect the signal.
Today I had a progress in the project. I gave the MCC=001 and MNC=01
in the openbts.config file (i.e. in the test mode) and one samsung mobile is
able to detect the signal from USRP2 but not able to register to it. Do you
know the reason why its not registering??
Thank you,
Madhuri.

You should not have to change any ports in your config file. The USRP2
connected on 192.168.10.2 is independent of the address and port

It says "UHD_003.001.000-unknown" does it have any significance?? I
installed UHD-003.001.000 images. Could you suggest me any specific mobile
to use? And the difficulties in registering to OpenBTS?? And is this got to
to anything with the external clock of 10MHz to the employed??? As of now
i'm just using the internal clock...
As previously mentioned, please further describe what happens when,
"the samsung mobile is able to detect the signal from USRP2 but not
able to register."
The mobile should receive a text message when it successfully selects
the BTS, which occurs independently of smqueue. If the mobile receives
the text, you should be able to dial into Asterisk.
If the mobile sees the OpenBTS signal, but does not receive a text
message, there may be a receive signal issue. Behaviour when this
occurs varies, but it is not uncommon for the mobile to repeatedly
lose signal while in idle mode as it tries to connect and then gives
up. Blackberry phones that display separate uplink / downlink activity
may be useful here.
If one mobile sees the signal, but another doesn't, then it is clearly
a handset issue. If you can, try manual search and network selection.
Locking to a stable 10 MHz reference helps, but generally isn't
necessary in my experience.
I recommend - to all UHD users - updating your copy of OpenBTS. Though
much of recent activity is mostly for the E100, many changes apply
generally to all UHD devices.
Also, please post a TRX log.
