Subject: [PUP] Reducing roll in a seaway

Thinking

of removing the "riding sail" from the mast but having second

thoughts.

John, I too have a trawler with a sailboat hull.  I use a sail at times but
a
bit different.  I run a large genoa from the mast to the bow stem.  It
works
very well as a down wind sail in 15+ knots of wind.  Under the right
conditions,
it adds 1+ knots to my SOG or I can reduce my RPM's by 100+ and
extend my
range.  I can say that it does not reduce roll to any discernible
degree.  I
enjoy using the sail.  It is easy to deploy and adjust.  It is not
a factory
option, it is something I designed and continue to tinker with.  I
think it
provides real enhancements to performance and I am happy I have it
since 50% of
my cruising is down wind to one degree or another.  The sail
will get a real
test next year when we depart for the Coconut Run through the
South Pacific.  If
I have catastophic engine failure on that trip, the sail
will get me downwind
someplace ala Thor Heyerdahl......at about the same
speed!
