You are asking for serious trouble if you use land batteries.  Check the
West Marine or Boat US Catalogs for a more detailed explanation.

I think the battery that sits up in the front of the engine compartment of my
car gets more physical punishment than the batteries in the engine room of my
boat.  Not only is it (the one in my car) subjected to temperature extremes,
but also vibration and shock (potholes), precipitation, road chemicals (salt,
petroleum).

Seriously, I think any good quality, well cared for battery will serve well in
a boat.  Ask Al Pilvinis about his Sears Die-Hards. :)
