My steel RPH trawler has a gross displacement of 44 tons, a net displacement 35 tons, and when last lifted, weighed in at a nominal 43 metric tons
It is about 50 feet long, 14.4 feet wide and draws about 4 feet of water.
I need to replace the mooring lines and I have narrowed it down to two choices of POLYESTER - MULTIFILAMENT BRAIDED ROPES
(http://www.soyluiplik.com.tr/eng/halatlar_01.asp)
The 5/8” diameter rope has a breaking strength of 6628 kg-f or 14612 lb-f
The 3/4” diameter rope has a breaking strength of 7852 kg-f or 17313 lb-f.
The yard gave me 3/4” 3 strand nylon ropes which are now have seen the end of their lifetime.
I have no idea what their breaking strength is. I have no idea how the yard decided 3/4 was good enough. My guess is they were cheap.
I oud prefer not to go with strand nylon as they are quite rough on the hands, hard to coil, hard to handle in long lengths, but quite easy to splice.
So, which one should I get.
Bigger here is not necessarily better because the bigger the line, the harder to handle.
So, suggestions? Recommendations?
I do not have the abundance of choices so if I should be looking somewhere else, I can try...
