'Lo all,
I've done a Google samurai search for this, but still haven't found a
website for someone who sells blocks of teak. Looking for two pieces
12"x10"x1 1/2" to replace the plastic cutting boards I used last year for my
Weaver davit installation.
Any hints on who might be able to supply this? And, if I opt for a
different, more easily obtained wood, any suggestions on the best type to
use?
Thanks.

I was working on my radar this weekend and have a
theory I would like to run by everyone. I put a
voltmeter on it and found I am low in voltage coming
into the antennae. Ground appears to be bad. I found
this by putting on the voltmeter and testing the two
incoming wires, power and ground. Black to boat
ground and red to unit power (as noted in the manual,
plug that goes to the anntenae) gives a good healthy
reading of 13.xx (13.26 maybe). Red to boat power and
black to unit ground gives 6.91 or 6.xx dont recall
exactly.
I appear to have two problems:
The antennae only rotates a few times, unless I
help it move at first. Then it keeps moving.
Once rotating, no images appear.
My theory is the low voltage doesnt give enough juice
to rotate the antennae at first but once moving there
is enough there to move it slowly. The second part of
my theory says since it is moving so slowly, and not
getting enough juice, it has trouble picking up any
images. How plausible is this theory?
Comments????

John......
Couple of points.: I'm not sure how safe teak oils are for consumption.
Since teak retains a lot of its natural oils, be sure to seal it up with
some sort of "food safe" salad bowl finish available at woodworking stores.
For cutting board use, I would as likely go with a good maple, again sealed
with a non-toxic oil coating.
I just had to look for small stocks of teak for a couple of boat projects,
and found the best source for small quantities is the yellow pages under
"hardwood" or "lumber". Teak is pretty hard to find in widths greater than
7-8 inches, and will be pricey if you do find it. For a block as you
describe, I'd visit a supplier and paw through his cutoffs. In small
quantities, expect to pay about $12-$14/bf, except at WM or B/US, where
it'll be $35-$50/bf

Here's my connection for teak:

it's in Huntington Park, close to Los Angeles downtown. They'll probably cut
and ship you the pieces that you need. Though if it's just for cutting
boards, I'd suggest using some other hardwood, like maple. As long as you
keep the boards well oiled, with some FDA-grade mineral oil, you should have
no problems. Teak is horrendously expensive, and pretty much politically
incorrect to use these days unless you get plantation-grown. Most teak comes
from Myanmar (Burma), where the rebels and the government are racing each
other to deforest their country in order to buy weapons to depopulate their
country. Don't mean to make you feel guilty, it's just good to know the
consequences of your choice.
Then again, teak isn't called "the king of woods" for nothing. It's
anti-skid properties, ability to take a beating, and superb weathering
qualities make it the perfect wood for boat building.
PS: I bought my cutting board from IKEA, about $12 from trash wood end cuts.
Best cutting board I've ever had!

Try: http://www.maritimewoodproducts.com But, if I were making a

Wood is preferable because it is supposed to contain natural antibodies
which kill bacteria.
Rather than get a 10x12 piece, why not laminate several strips to avoid
cupping, etc. That is the way most cutting boards are made. Finally, Teak
contains silicon abrasives which will dull steel knives - why not oak or
maple?
