Re: T&T: bilge pump capacity

This thread is timely - and I pass on to the list an event from  yesterday.
A fellow boater was told his pump had been coming on and off by  a
neighbor during the day while he was away at work.  Investigation  revealed that
the connection on his potable water pump failed and both the shore  water and
his freshwater tanks were pumping into his bilge.  The good news  is that
his 500 gph bilge pump stayed ahead of it all by itself - the bigger one  6"
up the bilge waterlevel never had to kick in (he knows this by witness marks
in the bilge).

Good thing it never failed.

And good thing liveaboards watch out for each other (his neighbor is a
quasi-hermit, but he still pays attention!).

He will again be more diligent about turning off the water when he leaves -
not just for several days but every morning.

We also both have (but no longer use for some reason) the totalizer made
for watering lawns.  You set the dial for total gallons and it shuts  off.
Clever device.  I think he will use both for a while.

That  statement also assumes the flow of water into the bilge stops
while  the pump is on. Obviously this is not going to happen in the
case of  a leak. And if the pump moves only slightly faster than the
leak it  could run for hours before it brings the level down to the low
water  mark.

By the way, just as an FYI for the list. I have mecanical counters on my
bilge pump, and I've just had another one fail (they don't seem to withstand
salt air). After a bit of searching I found a new product that looks great.
Price seems pretty reasonable too:

I've ordered one and will install it this summer. I'll let everyone know how
it works out.
