DNA = DeNatured Alcohol, standard solvent available at hardware stores
(Also used for stove fuel)
IPA = Iso-Propel Alcohol (more expensive, not as available, works too)
If you check with industrial solvent jobbers, I believe you'll find that
isopropyl alcohol is both cheaper and more abundant than denatured ethyl
alcohol. It is true that "electronic grade" IPA is a bit harder to find and
more than a bit more expensive but in the context of cleaning props, shafts,
and through hulls, the extra purity of "electronics grade" over "industrial
grade" isn't needed. I believe (but I'm not 100% sure) that IPA is a
somewhat more powerful solvent than DNA. The nice thing about alcohol as a
cleaner is that it will remove dirt as well as grease unlike many petroleum
based solvents that often leave parts fully degreased but still dirty.
BTW: For those that are unfamiliar with these types of materials, it's
important to remember that most of them can be very toxic and that they can
enter your system in a variety of ways. Gloves, eye protection, and good
ventilation are the order of the day.
Cautiously yours
