Water in fuel

Of interest to those who are getting water in their tanks, and not knowing where it's coming from...

Deck fill seal, no; deck fill O-ring, no; condensation, no; up the vent, because the line doesn't loop up before turning down, no. So where was it coming from?

Well, found it was coming in at the fuel gauge sending unit. The stainless steel screws that were holding the gauge in place on the tank, had corroded the aluminum, leaving enough space for water that was dripping onto the top of the tank to enter the tank. Even with a nice thick gasket, the holes were still sufficiently large enough to let water get in.

Not terribly difficult to identify, unless you fail to consider it.

Okay, now all of you can run down and check out your tanks.

My fuel gauge is a 3ft long brass rod with numbers on it.

Water dripping on top of my tank(s) from anywhere would scare the hell
out of me, as my biggest fear with this 25 year old boat is a leak in
the black iron tanks.
