Dear HBCU Library Alliance Colleagues,
We are excited to announce the launch of the HBCU Library Alliance Preservation Internship Program for 2025-2029. This program aims to introduce undergraduate HBCU student interns to careers in librarianship, with a special focus on preservation, including archives and conservation work. We are seeking host sites to provide hands-on internship experiences for these students alongside a comprehensive virtual curriculum.
Program Goals:
Introduce interns to careers in librarianship, emphasizing preservation.
Educate interns on the significance of material culture, particularly within HBCU libraries and BIPOC collections in PWIs.
Foster a supportive community among participants, supervisors, and instructors.
Document intern projects for broad dissemination through an open-access repository.
Program Logistics:
Duration: 6 weeks
Type: Hybrid (on-site and virtual)
Virtual cohort learning via shared core curriculum on preservation concepts
On-site, hands-on internship experience exploring primary topics from virtual seminars
Virtual orientation and seminars supplemented by on-site work
Tool kits provided for interns, funded by the grant
Housing, transportation, and stipends provided
Program Curriculum:
Virtual seminars on key preservation concepts
Alums from previous internship programs leading sessions on networking and career trajectories
Final session featuring intern project presentations recorded for open-access sharing
Housing and Transportation:
The host institution must provide or financially support local housing in full. This housing must be conveniently located near the institution. If interns must commute to the internship site, reliable public transportation must be available, or the host site must make an equivalent accommodation.
Round-trip travel from the intern’s home to the host site will be covered by the grant.
The grant will provide a stipend of $6,000 for each intern. (Host institutions that can contribute a partial or total amount of this stipend should specify this so it can be considered in the grant budget.)
Call for Host Sites: We invite institutions to serve as host sites for this prestigious internship program. Host sites will provide on-site internship experiences aligned with the program's goals and virtual curriculum. If interested, please specify the number of interns you can accommodate, your commitment to providing housing and stipends, and any unique opportunities your institution offers for interns.
Your participation will contribute to the professional development of aspiring librarians and preservationists. while promoting cultural heritage preservation within our communities.
