Not sure if Northern Pintails meet the criteria for Bird of the Month, but
they seem to be regulars at Crosby Ponds now and not seen a lot.

Hi Bev, and all CT birders,

Tina Green and I were discussing this today, and we believe the evolving
December BOTM list, for the first ten days of this month, is probably this,
with rarest/noteworthy species on top (assuming we did not forget/overlook
some rarity on the listserv):

Western Kingbird (first reported at Hammo in November...)
Tundra Swan
Northern Shrike
Black-throated Blue Warbler*
Red Knot
Northern Parula*
Osprey*
Snowy Owl
Harlequin Duck
Dickcissel,
Barrow’s Goldeneye

Note that the asterisked ones are rare only because of time-of-year, e.g.,
the two warblers and osprey, ..

None of these birds is super-rare, but the 21 CT Christmas Bird Counts this
month (and in early January) may find something super-rare, TBD, and we
will add it to this ranked list, at or near the top.

We will keep updating, adjusting and re-posting this evolving BOTM list of
top ten or fifteen "rarities" here on CTBirds listserv every few days
throughout this month.  Assuming that BOTM candidate birds are reported-in
through posting them on the COA CTBirds listserv (hopefully with "BOTM" at
the beginning of the subject line, to catch our attention.

We are open to hearing different opinions about this list, about ranking
noteworthiness, about overlooked birds,  etc.
But, while Northern Pintails are a good candidate bird (thanks for
reporting them), we do not believe they are in the top group, as listed
above.

Best regards,
Tom Robben

A suggestion for BOTM would be to have candidates and finalists for each county, and from those have a finalist for the entire state.

Hi Jeff, Thanks for your interest.
Adding a county dimension to BOTM is an interesting idea.  I like it,
although it adds some complexity
How about we run BOTM this month for the overall state first, to keep it
simple,
and if it is successful, then we talk about extending it to counties in
coming months.
Let's "jump-start" it this month (which is already one third over, and busy
with Holidays), learn what we can from this December experiment, and then
decide if/how to proceed.
Again, your interest is much appreciated, and lets discuss this in
several weeks.
Good Birding, and Happy  Healthy Holidays,
