A friend is looking at a Spindrift 40' trawler. I've never heard of them.
This is a 1986 model with twin 160 HP Volvo turbo diesels. On the
transmissions, we can't figure out how to get an oil sample! There is a big
slotted screw on top, then a plug that needs a big allen wrench to open. We
don't just want to start taking things out, since I understand there is a
check valve under one of them. Any experiences with this boat or the engine
and transmissions? Anything to look out for? The survey looked pretty good,
but the engines and genset will need a lot of catch-up maintenance.

I have the 130 HP version, TMD40/MS3C. The slotted bolt that is
highest has the dipstick on it, the one that is aft and lower is the
fill.
