Highlights of reports received March 17 through March 24
from the Niagara Frontier Region.
March 19 - EURASIAN WIGEON at Windmill Marsh in the Oak
Orchard Wildlife Management Area, viewed from the Albion
Road tower.
SANDHILL CRANES widely reported this week. Three in the
Chautauqua County Town of Sheridan, two at the wetland on
Porter-Center Road in Niagara County, and single SANDHILL
CRANES at Kumpf Marsh and Casey Road in the Iroquois Refuge,
and at Windmill Marsh.
Another record of an early COMMON TERN - March 20 at the
Beaver Island State Park marina on the upper Niagara River.
On the lower Niagara River, up to three LITTLE GULLS among
BONAPARTE'S GULLS at the Lewiston docks. Flocks of migrant
BONAPARTE'S GULLS also noted at Beaver Island State Park and
the Lake Ontario shore.
Arriving reports - OSPREY on the 24th at Lake Gibson in
Thorold, Ontario. RED-SHOULDERED HAWK at a breeding site in
the Genesee County Town of Darien. EASTERN TOWHEE in
Sheridan, FOX SPARROW at a feeder in Lewiston, and multiple
reports of NORTHERN FLICKER, EASTERN MEADOWLARK and SAVANNAH
SPARROW.
Winter visitors now become migrants - ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK in
Sheridan. Four SNOWY OWLS on the outer harbor breakwalls in
Buffalo. Two LAPLAND LONGSPURS with numbers of HORNED LARKS
in Bethany in Genesee County, and AMER. TREE SPARROWS at
several locations.
March 22, waterbird flights on Lake Ontario at Route 425 in
Wilson - 274 RED-THROATED LOONS, a single COMMON LOON, 4
HORNED GREBES, 32 RED-NECKED GREBES, over 400 LONG-TAILED
DUCKS, 159 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and 12 SURF SCOTERS.
