Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsThey are doing repairs on the city docks in from of City Hall in Savannah.
There are signs posted that the the docks will be closed for day and
overnight on this Mon and Tuesday. There were old signs that said it was
closed last week also. My guess in that for the near future they will be
doing maintenance on the dock every Mon and Tues so contact them if you plan
a stay.
The new dock downriver from the Marriot - the first dock you come to at the
downriver side of the riverwalk - seems to be potentially an expansion of
the city docks. Construction of the dock is similar to the regular city
docks and it leads to a promenade where you can walk upriver. My guess is
that there will be shoreside construction of shops and restaurants soon.
There are no signs indicating that docking is prohibited.
For now this could be valuable to accommodate overflow from the city dock
for late arrivals.

I spoke with Shawn Emerson at the City Mobility and Parking Services
Department which has responsibility for the docks. The work has been to
repair the ramps and should be completed this week. No further closures are
anticipated.
Of bigger news is the city is going to once again charge for dockage. The
fee structure has been established and will be implemented by months end. I
have posted the info on the Waterway Guide website but bottom line is that
dockage will be $1.50/ft for 24 hours. If you tie up for three hours or less
there is no charge.

It will be interesting to see how the boating market responds to this. Even
though the location is excellent my experience is that the free nature is
the main draw of the site. The hotels docks nearby charge around double the
1.50/ft but you have some services expecially water and real electricity
not the 15amp service (on GFI sockets that do not work with my boat) and
that sometimes work and sometimes not. Water bibs are in bad repair and
only a few for the whole dock.
I have made this a regular stop but will now have to re-evaluate stopping at
Thunderbolt instead.
This will free up space for the locals who come to enjoy and afternoon and
do not stay overnight and who were probably complaining about all the
freeloaders who stayed for days and took all the space.
<Add standard paragraph about how much money I spend at the free site, the
taxes they will lose and they will never get my business again>

Aw I will probably stop there again in the fall and pay the freight and
remember the good ol days.

Stopping downtown Savannah was one of the highlights of cruising up/down the
ICW. Back then it was only $1/ft, 15 amp was fine, and water availibility
great. We would always anchor out the night before and plan to arrive
sometime in the morning at slack current.
