Mike,
Tell her the dog must have done it.
Back around 1970 when I first bought a microwave oven
I deliberately blew up an egg just to see what would happen.
I put it in a quart-sized Pyrex measuring cup, then covered
the top with a couple layers of Saran Wrap with a tight
rubber band to help hold the SW in place. I fired up the
oven and watched expectantly, and eventually the egg made
a soft pop noise and split open. So far, no mess at all. Well,
that was a disappointment! Then it occurred to me to cook it
some more and eat it to see if this might be a viable way of
cooking raw eggs. So I punched the "go" button, and turned
my back on it while I looked for a fork. Suddenly there was
a loud BANG!, and when I looked the already split egg was
now in many pieces all over the inside of the oven. Apparently
it's not the shell that contains the pre-explosion pressure
build up, but rather internally-cooked layers of the white or yolk.
A few years later a friend suggested a warning placard that
should be placed on all microwave ovens: "Warning, do not
attempt to cook coconuts in this oven!". The two of us
discussed this at length and eventually the temptation to try
it grew irresistible. We asked around until we found someone
who had an oven that he regarded as "sacrificial" to use for
the test. This, too, was a disappointment. Eventually the shell
cracked open and leaked out the "milk", but hardly made a
sound at all. We had been expecting it to go off like a bomb,
so we had set up the experiment outdoors and wore safety
goggles and all that.
I do often warm up refrigerated boiled eggs in my microwave,
in two stages of about 12-13 seconds each with about 1 minute
in between to allow heat to spread away from the hot spots.
I've never blown up an egg in this manner, until I once got
distracted and forgot to stop the oven at the end of the 2nd
heating cycle. That did end with an explosion and quite a
mess to clean up. Being XYL-less with no pets, I had to
place the blame entirely on myself, but at least I was free
to verbally ionize the air for a bit by way of cooling off.

Mike,
Tell her the dog must have done it.
That *did* end with an explosion and quite a
mess to clean up. Being XYL-less with no pets, I had to
place the blame entirely on myself, but at least I was free
to verbally ionize the air for a bit by way of cooling off.

A company I am familiar with had a customer who complained that their wifi
products would go off line about 11 AM everyday. As typical they claimed
other products didn't have the same issue.
The company investigated it and discovered that the workers had taken the
doors off of the microwave ovens and defeated the safety switches to speed
up the lunch line. Didn't take long for their customer to resolve the
issue.

I remember a story about a radio astronomy observatory (perhaps on mauna
kea) that was seeing a consistent signal at the same time every night but
couldn't explain it. (It's aliens!) Turns out a night janitor in one of the
support buildings was ignoring blackout times and microwaved his dinner
when he went on break at the same time each night.
