If anyone is looking for a crank up tower, here is one for the effort of
getting it down. This is at the QTH of Reno, WT8C (SK) in Mentor, Ohio.
For more info contact Tom, K8AZ.

As far as last weekend, that news is positive. Several of us were at
Connie Tonsi’s house. With the help of Jim, AA8OY and Tim, W3YQ, and
another Jim, KB8N (a good friend of K3LR), we managed to take care of
Reno’s radio estate. Tim was able to crank down Reno’s 54’ crank-up tower
– no small feat after 4-5 years of being up surrounded by growing trees,
and we are now relieved that it will be possible to remove the antennas
with the tower nested. That process is now scheduled for the weekend of
May 8-9, depending on Tim’s schedule; we will welcome help and I will
announce details as soon as I have them.
In that regard, all the radio equipment and antennas have been purchased,
but the Hy-Gain HG-54HD tower has not. I do recall that Reno paid to
replace the winch cable was replaced with SS aircraft cable 5 or more years
ago – that cable is still shiny and bright, and is likely the reason that
the tower came down so smoothly after years of being fully extended. But
it is an older tower, and there is no “tilt over erection fixture” to
softly lower it once the antennas are removed. The current plan is to
remove the antennas and rotor and then (literally) “drop” the tower, and
call a scrap yard to come haul it away. So if you know anyone who wants it
and is willing to remove it, speak now.
The key here is, Connie has already signed with a realtor and the house is
going on the market. She also has purchased a condo and is preparing to
move, so we do not have time to waste. And, without doubt, experience has
dictated that realtors will not show a house where a tower is erect and
“will be removed in the future if a sale is made”. My guess is that they
have heard that story before – and know that those promises are sometimes
hard to keep.
