Jim Maugham wrote early April that the Verizon 3G network, which
normally costs $80 per month for data only, is free to Verizon DSL
users. I find this very interesting-- I had DSL from Verizon at my last
house and can't find info about this option anywhere and Verizon won't
confirm it. Since DSL costs $30 month and a phone line about $20 it is
obviously cheaper just to have a phone line and not use it! Recently I
cancelled my DSL option at my new location and went to Comcast which of
course is faster, however Verizon still bill me although I have no phone
(we're straightening that one out) and I still have the DSL modem which
they sent me in error and haven't sent me a return label even though
they have promised it several times.
Secondly - I use Verizon wireless QuickNet (should be slownet) and tried
the 1XRTT the other day aboard - quite impressive near Annapolis. I was
cautioned on the interface that I may be charged so I logged 5 minutes
to see if my Verizon bill next month will reflect this - has anyone had
this experience?
Thirdly Jim notes a free web access point which is nice, but Verizon
still offers free WWW access anyway to their cell phone users.

I apologize to the several folks that have asked me about this of late, but
there appears to be some differences in implementation of this program depending
on your geographic area. (Plus, I'm more than a little behind in my email!)
Anyone who would like to do some experimenting can try the following:
For Quicknet (QNC) access.
Connect phone via USB Cable, setup standard Dial-Up connection chosing the phone
as the modem. In the Phone number blank enter #777, for username & password
enter qnc, in the initialization string enter AT$QCMDR=2
For Express Network (EN) connection.
Connect phone via USB Cable, setup standard Dial-Up connection chosing the phone
as the modem. In the Phone number blank enter #777, for the username enter your
10digit#@vzw3G.com [Ex. 5552221111@vzw3G.com] for the password enter vzw for the
modem initialization string enter AT$QCMDR=3
The number to call to ensure that EN is enabled on your service is
1-800-308-DATA, and talk with the tech's there, follow menu options 3-3-2 (or if
it changes whatever works to get you to the Express Network Technical
Assistance).

This can be hacked if you're a Verizon Wireless subscriber with QuickNet
enabled. You'll have to hunt through this thread to find the proper setup for
your phone and it WILL subtract from your allowable minutes unless you have a
plan that provides free nights/weekends minutes and you access the system during
that period, but there will be no per Byte charge.

BTW, minutes are determined from when the call ENDS, so if you have free nights
after 9PM (for instance) and you connect at 8PM and stay online until 9:30PM,
there won't be any per minute charge.

James
