None of this new S-57 format provides one with Electronic Computer
Navigation (ECN). To do that you will still need a commercial ECN
application of some kind. However, it would seem logical that as the
charts are available free, some ECN publishers will have to rethink
their offerings.
MaxSea already supports S-57 charts. In fact, if you buy MaxSea from
www.setsail.com, depending on the version you order, they include a CD with
the complete most current version of the S-57 charts free of charge.
No affiliation with MaxSea (the makers of great ECN software that just
works and doesn't crash all the time) or SetSail, just a satisfied customer.
