Re: Class B AIS usefulness

This is a subject that varies greatly by operating area.

On off shore passages, I find it very useful to identify radar targets. Ships are difficult to contact on VHF. AIS gives you a name and DSC which seems to always work.

In the GICW west of the Mississippi, there is a tremendous amount of towboat traffic. AIS lets you see who’s coming many time before you can see them. With the boat name, you can contact them to arrange to pass them safely. Or, they can contact you if they are concerned that you are meeting in an unsafe place such as a tight bend.

Overall, it a great tool.
