Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsTraveled by GIWW from Panama City to Mobile over the last three days and saw
no sign of any oil. Besides the large force of boats and booms at the ready
in Panama City, we saw no booms until we got to the eastern end of Big
Lagoon
in Pensacola. The boom there, as in several other places, was in the
water
and doubled back along itself and anchored in readiness to be pulled
across
the GIWW. We saw a tug with two barges full of oil spill containment
equipment anchored about midway down Big Lagoon. We next saw oil booms
ready
to spread across the various canal openings on the private Ono Island
where we
spent the night. Next place we saw a partially deployed boom was
at the
narrows of the GIWW just west of Bear Point Marina, orange Beach, AL.
We saw
other booms in readiness at several other bayou mouths. Just before
we left
the GIWW and entered Mobile Bay, the were several tugs and barges
with oil
spill equipment moored alongside the waterway. Mobile Bay cannot
be defended
from a spreading spill, but there is no oil in it now.
We saw a number of
large skiffs with what were obviously oil spill workers
in them cruising
around. These are probably the boom tenders which will
deploy the booms on a
moment's notice.

Perhaps you read the
report by Rich Gano that appeared in today's Great Loop List. Rich (forgive
me) is wrong about one thing! He said that Mobile Bay cannot be protected from
the spill and that is just not true! His transit across Mobile Bay to Dog
River where he is now tied up would not take him OUT to the entrance to the
bay. THERE IS A DOUBLE BARRIER ACROSS THE ENTRANCE , with two 'gates' and a
'cleaning basin' between the two barriers so that ships entering the Bay are
cleaned (somehow) before actually coming IN to the bay. Driving down the
Eastern Shore to the Grand Hotel today I could see smaller booms protecting
part of this shore (Fairhope/Pt Clare) with more to come. So far, the slick is
not near the entrance to Mobile Bay! Rest assured though, Obama is in charge
now!
