I have an external corrosion problem on my ferrous-steel, diesel-fuel
tanks. I believe the source of the problem has been eliminated.  The tanks
are, of course, in a relatively inaccessable area.

Hi all,
Mike brought up a problem that is worthy of all of us to check.
I strongly urge anyone who has steel diesel tanks to check them right
now.  Check the top of the tank where the filler hose enters the
tank.  Sure it may be hard to get at,  but do it.  Use a
flashlight, wire brush, and mirror if necessary.
What happens is water leaks past the filler cap in the deck, runs
down the filler hose and accumulates on top of the tank(s).  The
resulting rust, ......well,  you get the picture.
I had to replace my tanks a couple of years ago right after
the pre-purchase surveyor missed this critical item.
Cost? Over $6,000.
