The Harris’s Sparrow was at the feeder and on the lawn of the house immediately east of 6547 Ellis Road at 8 –8:30 this morning. The latest Hamilton Study Area record of a bird overwintering at a feeder is May 4, 1972 so the Cambridge bird may stick around for quite a bit longer in this cold (normal?) spring. This evening Jesse Pakkala and myself decided to stop at the Harris Sparrow location in Cambridge around 6:30pm, on the fluke chance that it was still around. After several minutes of searching with no luck we decided it was time to leave. Sure enough while sitting in the car Jesse spotted the Harris Sparrow sitting out in the open on some bushes east of the small pond (which is across the street from 6547 Ellis Rd.) I managed a poor record shot of this bird. Found the bird around 9:00an this morning. Marilyn Holden from New Westminster, spotted it perched atop a pine directly adjacent(east) to 6547 Ellis Rd. She called it out and I got an10 second look. Naturally, just as I reached for my camera the bird flew and entered the tree. About half an hour later I believe I saw it briefly on the ground on the west side of the house, but it was gone soon after. It was not seen again when I left at 10:30 or so.
