Single-Handed Boat for Great Loop

A friend has asked me to put this question to fellow loopers about the perfect
single-hander powerboat for the loop as well as to get under the Erie Canal
bridges.  Seaworthy enough for the Great Lakes, comfortable to live aboard, and
easy to manage in docking situations.  Suggestions?

Thanks

Jane,

The best small boat for a single-hander to do the Great Loop that
we've seen is the C-RANGER 25 Trailerable Trawler.  It is 8.6 ft
wide, and comes with a 135hp diesel engine, bow and stern thrusters,
air conditioning & heater.  Well designed and seaworthy.  We saw the
boat at the Annapolis Power Boat Show and were most impressed!!!  We
do not work for the company and/or for a dealership, but we have
completed the Loop and part of the Erie Canal.

Website is: < http://www.c-ranger.com/ > (Click on Model R-25).

You will get as many suggestions as there are boats out there.  The first
thing you need to do is eliminate any boats that cannot clear 15 feet overhead
and 5 feet draft if you want to do all the canals and side trips.  I will
quote a revered cruiser here when I say  "Buy the smallest boat you can be
comfortable on, not the biggest boat you can afford" Skipper Bob.  You can
learn a lot just by being on this and other lists.

Interesting article in this morning's St. Pete Times.  Feel sorry for the family.

Is there some way this could be avoided?

A little biased comparison.....
You get a lot of boat and equipment on the Ranger 25 for $120,000.  I don't
see a trailer included and the fact that the only door is to the aft deck
would make me a little nervous.  There is a hatch in the V-berth though.  My
little boat has 3 doors, one on both sides of the pilot house and one to the
aft deck, plus the forward hatch.  I like the access and the escape ability.
The Ranger is semi-planing at 4 mpg, if you want speed...I prefer mine at
less than 1 gph..top speed 9 kts....about $25. per day +or-.

There are several benefits having a trailer boat...no marina storage fees,
no bottom deterioration, no worries about the boat being broken into or
sinking while you are away, easy to repair and maintain while in your
driveway, provision the boat from home and drive away, and access to any
body of water overland.
There is a lot to be said for little boats.  These work well for couples
too....some better than others.:>)

A similar idea is:

by Murphy.

Of course, there is the C-Dory (several on the loop now or parts of it):

As a 67 year old captain, considering this just coming off knee
replacement I have a few thoughts.

Trailerable makes sense and 8'6" is the max.  I built a 32 ft power
tri, a few years back I termed a geriatric special,  and while I no
longer have it, though I wish I did, I have a few thoughts.

If you allow for wide walk around decks and side cabin doors you reduce
the width of any deck cabin structure to a unusable width. I found 12"
side decks really too narrow.

I would prefer sheer to sheer structure with opening large windows or
1/2  doors to access center springs etc.

I also found storage areas under sole, cockpit or anything requiring
kneeling to be a problem.  My orthopedic surgeon and what I can find
online all say avoid kneeling. This makes a problem.

I'd like a fwd cockpit  but a hatch fwd  where you can be waist high and
reach the bow, and sheer is acceptable.

BUT

If you have a berth under that you stand on your going to get water and
worse below on it so the bow V berth may not be the way to go.  I see a
storage area with fold down platform to stand on to work through the hatch.

Just my thoughts.  I may have to build another boat but how to do it
without kneeling is a unresolved question.

I built a 37 ft cat upside down and inside out and that might be the way
to go <BG>

Yes Sir,

A full Alaska Trader (by Murphy) with the same picture (I believe):

http://www.onestopmotors.com/ad_details.aspx?ad_id=8346

If you're trying to access the youtube movies, youtube appears down
for maintenance right now, but you can usually use the back channel
at my website ( http://www.treasuresites.com ) by selecting "all the
movies" near the top and that'll pull the main page.  The C-Dory
stuff is obvious and on the sides are C-Dory movies (once you get to
youtube) by others.  The "Fords Terror" one (not by me) is
enlightening to say the least.

If that doesn't work, try again in a few hours.
