So, Jeffrey, what is the advantage of this new mifi over say a simple air
card? Maybe I am just a neanderthal on the latest techy stuff. I am not
interested in running 5 devices at once on my boat. Just one computer on
the internet will make me happy.

The first MiFi review has come out:

The MiFi isn't available to normal people yet but this first review

looks pretty good.  One nice feature that wasn't obvious from the
specs is that you can run it plugged into the USB port.  That allows

it to stay charged instead of using it's battery power.  That's a
nice
touch.

I haven't seen a price for it yet.  If it comes in under $200, it's

going to be a hot product even though you give up some options by
using it.  If Verizon and AT&T are smart, they'd release it for $99

(or free) with a yearly aircard plan.

I am not interested in running 5 devices at once on
my boat. Just one computer on the internet will
make me happy.

If you're only ever going to attach one device, there is no advantage
to the MiFi (assuming your aircard is the latest technology - the MiFi
implements the current fastest connectivity).

Now there's a big difference between my use of the word "device" and
your use of the word "computer."  While it's true that you might only
ever want one computer on the internet while cruising, you might very
well want multiple devices.  Today it is very common to have phones,
cameras, game consoles, and TV's with full internet/WiFi
connectivity.  I fully expect that the chartplotter of the future will
have internet and WiFi connectivity.  Surely Raymarine, Garmin,
Furuno, etc. will eventually realize that having ActiveCaptain on
their plotters is exactly what's needed!  ;-)

If you already have a high speed aircard and only want one computer
connected today, I wouldn't get a MiFi.  Unless you want to be really
cool...
