TWL: Auto Pilot operation

I have had 3 different makes of Autopilot over the last 10 years;
Autohelm 7000, Cetrek, and now a Simrad badged Robertson (AP20). The
Cetrek and the Simrad were on the same version of aft cabin trawler, but
the former was 50 ft and the latter 54 ft. The Cetrek struggled in
following or quartering seas, and I put this down specifically to the
pilot. But after talking around I decided to install the Simrad on the
new Sally Lillian, but with a rate compass instead of the standard unit.
A transformation, straight as an arrow in up to 10- 12 ft quartering
seas! So the question for you guys with the Robertson units that do not
perform is; what compass do you have feeding it?

Merry Christmas from the UK.
