Ron et al,

To safely pick up a snapping turtle:  stand behind the turtle, grip both sides of
its shell behind  the halfway point (closer to rear end of turtle) of the shell.
Gently move the turtle.  Snapper mouths can't reach that far.  Also, never pick
up any turtle by its tail, or spinal injury can result.
Late May, early June is when turtles are on the move to lay eggs.
If you see one in a road, just move it to the side of the road it was headed for.
