Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsWe started The Loop in March of 2004 in Florida. Instead of finishing it last Fall, we turned right at Mobile and spent the winter along the Mississippi Sound and Lake Pontechartrain. (We had thought we would be writing about that sojourn to encourage others to do the same.) In May we backtracked up to the Cumberland and now we are on our way to Chattanooga on the Tennessee. Plans are to start the trip down to Mobile in October. So, here's our question: given the amount of damage done along the Gulf Coast last year, are the anchorages still useable? We understand there were numerous boats sunk around the Pensacola area. Also, we are a slow boat and anticipate using the rivers in the Big Bend area. Does anyone have any recent experience in navigating the Steinhatchee, Suwanee, Withlahootche and Crystal Rivers? We are 40' long and draw 3.5 feet. Martha aboard Sandpiper, Schucker 436
You will be able to enter the Steinhatchee, Withlahootche, and Crystal
rivers, but do watch the tide and the channel marks. The entrance channel
for the Suwannee will very likely be too shallow for you.
