One possible downside occurs to me. The key to happy holding tanks is to
keep the aerobic bacteria alive and well. The stink starts when the
'good' bacteria die and the anaerboic bacteria grow. So I wonder if the

Agreed. Though when out cruising whatever is in the holding tanks will
end up offshore. In the remote islands it is a challenge as to how to
dispose of oil, used filters, etc. It's not uncommon to have a village
say "no worries, we'll take care of it", then see them stroll down to the
beach later to bury it.
