Re: T&T: Top coat wood interior floors for UV

In the year and a half since Irma the BVI has transitioned to a very busy work environment.  Our business lost the roof and all of the contents in Irma, had a roof back on early November 2017 and have been working as much overtime as our expanded work force want.  Marine business was non-existent till February 2018 with very few insurance claims settled, lots of new charter boats with all new sails and canvas; we won’t see a lot of that business for a few more years.  The billionaires up in North Sound threw near unlimited budgets at us to get their places up and running with awnings, shade sails, upholstery, so land based business has eclipsed marine, but no complaints.  We spent so much time in North Sound last summer and fall that we kept a work boat at Leverick Bay Marina and a truck on VG so we could take the ferry to Spanish Town instead of slogging up Drake Channel when the trades were up.

Those businesses which had the here-with-all, mentally and financially, to rebuild have done so and are stronger for it; the marginal businesses are gone.  It is a much more tightly knit marine business community with everyone helping each other.  My daughter and her husband’s yacht management company has opened a re-fit center at Nanny Cay with wood, machine and welding shops in house.  They plan to have later in the year a climate controlled paint facility so one-stop-shop for boating needs.

The down side is a lack of free time so being able to get somewhere to enjoy the water has become more of a priority.  So much for limin under the palm trees!!

I haven’t been very active on the list since the loss of Another Asylum, our 60’ trawler, in Irma and Maria; battered in Irma, got her to Puerto Rico, hauled and surveyed before Maria, blew off of the stands in Maria onto the less damaged side.  80% loss from Irma, 40% loss from Maria, a not very happy insurance company after being presented with two fully documented losses, but which saw the light with some arm twisting.  We had lived on board for seventeen years, had been through seven hurricanes with zero damage, but now realize that the only viable solution for a bigger boat is too have it strapped down in a pit for 4-5 months each year, meaning living aboard is no longer an option.

We have now purchased a 1993 Riviera 39 sportfish, which had belonged to a friend from new, for use as a getaway boat.  It needed a full interior makeover as it was original and one of the projects we have been doing is installing teak and holly flooring throughout. We have built up five coats of interior urethane and have noticed some lightening in places from UV.  It has been suggested that a spar varnish be used for top coating, but I am sure that many of you have found other options.

We will have 65% light block mesh on the saloon side windows and 92% mesh across the front, which will help, but I would prefer to finish the coating with something UV resistant and forget about it for our life on the boat!!

Quite looking forward to going upwind at 20 knts.
