Does anyone on the list have a source or has installed a remote video
cam or web cam that can access a wireless internet connection? Turnkey
solution is better for my limited IT skills. I was thinking of either a
web cam that took pictures and downloaded them to a website via
wireless connection or land line.  I know that you could spend anything
you want on this kind of equipment but was looking for a reasonable
cost to check out the boat when am not there and had access to the
internet.  Yes, I am obsessed with my boat and my computer.

i use a cheap USB cam, with Active Webcam from www.pysoft.com which is very
flexible and easy to use.  Images are uploaded to my server (every 10
seconds) thru a cingular G3 cel connection.    see link below...

it works well, but if the connection goes down while i'm away, i can't
restart it.  Wifi may be more reliable...  there are webcams with build in
servers but you still have to rely on a good connection.  how about adding a
phoneline and using remote control software like PCAnywhere ?

the nice thing about a web based webcam is that you can even check on your
boat from your cel phone... yes i do that sometimes :-)

i looked at these but you still need to have a computer with a local
network, or have a wifi network within range to upload the images on the
web.  if you only have a single computer on board, you still need to wire it
to the computer or add a router, dont' you ?

Pascal,

Some of the webcams that are advertised have their own IP address but I
don't know how they would log onto a wifi
in a marina for instance without a computer that could access the
internet via wifi or landline. I was looking for a stand alone unit
or a couple components that you could cobble together or a turnkey
system that was already set up.

Yes, you need a wireless (wifi) network, or you could, I suppose, connect
it to your network via ethernet cables. In any case, yes, you need a router
of your own so you can control access to the camera.

if you have a computer your can leave on, any basic USB cam will work.  as i
mentioned, i like Active Webcam from pysoft.com    you can try it for free
and it has many options.
the connection to the web remains the tricky part as you need something that
will auto reconnect if the connection drops.
