National Coalition for Literacy Board Members List
View all threadsNCL Board Members,
Every year the Committee for Education Funding (CEF) holds a morning legislative conference on the Hill on the same day as their evening fundraising gala. This yearâs speakers look to be pretty good. In addition to legislative staff, we have a panel of business leaders to talk about the importance of federal support for education, including Jessica Herrera-Flanigan, Executive VP of Government Relations & Public Policy at Univision, and James Brett, President and CEO of the New England Council. (Weâre working on others.) This yearâs event will be held on October 7th.
As a way to maximize the value of the trip to D.C. for out-of-town members of NCL, what do you think about idea of scheduling our member meeting on the afternoon of the 7th? We could meet over at the Hall of States afterward from, say, 1-5pm. Any member who identifies themselves as a member of NCL can go to the legislative event in the morning, because NCL is a member of CEF. (Not the same for the gala â members would have to purchase tickets for that.)
This also gives people a little more time to make their travel arrangements.
We havenât announced a meeting date yet, but I am cognizant that some members of the board may have already made travel plans for the date we had picked (Sept. 17th, I believe). Have any of you?
What do you think of this idea?

As we discussed on our last meeting - to run the date by our constituencies
I am not available on October 7th, but am dropping off the board anyway,
which I mentioned to Deborah when she asked me. I just don't have the time
to dedicate to this role as I would have liked and think it needs to
benefit NCL. I wish you all well and will remain a strong advocate for NCL
and our field.

Thanks Jeff â both your terrific work on our membership committee and for your board service overall. And good point about travel⦠however it doesnât sound like COABE has made any travel plans as yet. The other responses from board members were positive on the Oct. 7 date, and some conversations Iâve had off-line with members were as well.
So, with that in mind, Iâm going to go ahead and announce Oct. 7 as the date to the members this week â anyone on the board who has a concern or objection, please do so by COB today.
Thanks everyone!
