Greetings to all
I am in the process of trying to save a 1976 Marine Trader 34' D/C trawler
from both the usual wear and tear + the total ignorance of it's past owners.
I'm looking for advice from other MT owners who have probably fought the
same problems.
Easy Stuff:
At one point in the boat's life there was a serious exhaust problem. The
exhaust system hoses were replaced complete, but the salon cushions are
saturated with diesel smell. Removing the covers and washing them helped,
and replacing the foam is probably the only way to get it out of there, but
how to get it completely out of the cushion covers themselves?
The tachometer is broken. A past owner hooked up a tach to the alternator
but it's so far off it's basically useless -- not to mention ugly. Assuming
that the tach take-off on the Lehman is ok, any suggestions on where to get
a cable?
Harder Stuff:
Like all old MT's it leaks in a few places. My strategy is: First stop the
leaks, then repair the damage. The scuppers were all cracked wide open,
exposing wood, I was able to dig out all the dead wood and re-glass, those
leaks were easy.
Amazingly enough the Windows have all been repaired and do not leak.
Of course the decks are an issue. Where the deck boards are loose, I can
push on them after a good rain and water squeezes out. Am I wasting my time
digging out the old caulk and replacing it? Or should I assume that the
glass under the deck in those areas is toast, rip out the deck boards,
reglass, and replace them?
Thanks
