Should we split the mailing list into "support" and "announcements"?

Hi Everybody,

I would like to propose that the mailing list be split into two separate
ones that would reflect the two kinds of common messages that are posted.

Most of the messages on this list deal with support issues: questions about
the UHD API, about hardware interfaces and drivers (e.g., Ethernet cards),
or about hardware failures or quirks. I have posted several such messages
and in all cases got a prompt and useful reply from Ettus employees and/or
from fellow users.

However, for me and I conjecture that for many other users of Ettus radios,
the volume of these messages make it impossible to actually pay attention
to them. There are now several such messages a day and I can't afford to
spend the time to read them. I sometimes scan just the subjects to see if
there are ones that I am particularly qualified to answer, but even that is
not easy.

I would very much like to pay attention to the other type of messages on
the list, which are announcements (of new UHD releases, new products, and
software that works with USRPs). There are typically a lot fewer of those
than support-request messaged.

It would be easier if there were two list, something like usrp-support and
usrp-announcements.

Please give it a thought.

Regards, Sivan

Sivan,

Thank you for your feedback.  We've thought about this in the past, but
we're going to keep things as is for now.  I've found that when there are
multiple lists, you end up with people posting to both anyway, and it
generally reduces the number of people paying attention.  If the volume on
the list is too high, you can choose to get digests delivered to you.  That
will bundle the emails together into a single one.  I believe that some
mail readers will still allow you to respond to individual messages from a
digest.

We do have a separate list for product announcements, which you can sign up
for in the lower right corner of the ettus.com main page, but that only has
major announcements like new products, not software releases.
