OPPORTUNITY
Metro Parks Tacoma is seeking an artist or artist team to create an artful experience on Sail Mound B which is an open, flat, triangular 15' x 15' x 15' space atop a small hill, at the newly developed Dune Peninsula at Point Defiance Park. With 360 degree views of Puget Sound, Point Defiance Park, and the ferry terminal, the space will naturally draw people to it. On clear days, the triangular space is directly aligned with a spectacular, uninterrupted view of Mount Rainier. The artwork should build upon the surrounding views and environment to create an inviting, rewarding experience for those who make the trip up the hill. The artwork should complement the park, but create a different experience than the areas atop the 2 other nearby sail mounds. The artist will coordinate their work with Site Workshop Landscape Architects.
Emerging local artists are especially encouraged to apply.
After the initial application review, 3 finalists will be selected and paid a $500 stipend each to develop a preliminary proposal. That proposal will include a written description, budget, and concept renderings to be presented during an in-person interview. Further details will be communicated to finalists upon selection. One artist or artist team will be selected from the 3 finalists to complete this project.
