Your fluxgate compass may be affected by the magnetic field
produced around the power-feed wires to the VHF.  Since the
magnetic field is proportional to the current flowing, you
notice the problem only when transmitting (the vhf is
drawing much more power).  Check to see how close to the
fluxgate the power wires to the VHF lead.  Re-route the
wires farther away, or if not possible, re-install the
power wires after twisting them together along their whole
length, especially near the compass.  Installing twisted
wire pairs in all electrical wiring near compases should be
standard operating procedure.
