What are the advertising rules on this list?

Hi Rex,
The rules are that TWL is intended for the non-commercial use of its
members.
The way that has been interpreted is as follows:
If you sell a product or service you are prohibited from promoting it on
TWL.
If you like a product or service you are encouraged to share that
information with the rest of our members (Provided that you don't profit
financially as a result).
In the example that you apparently take exception to, Georgs told the list
about being impressed with RayTech Navigator. To my knowledge Georgs has no
financial interest in Raymarine. This sort of endorsement is common on TWL.
Georgs also included information supplied to him by a Raymarine employee.
That information was clearly labeled as to its source. Again, this is a
fairly common thing on TWL.
Many TWListees will include a disclaimer with any product endorsement to the
effect that there is no connection between endorser and endorsee. Admittedly
Georgs did not include a disclaimer with his post. There are two reasons
behind this: First, as Georgs himself has said, since we are all ladies and
gentlemen here the honor system should suffice and disclaimers are
superfluous. Second, as the owner of TWL Georgs probably assumes that we
already know that he has no financial interest in Raymarine.
Since I have seen two requests for information on this topic I am posting
this to the list rather than privately. I hope that I've alleviated your
concerns.
Thank you,
Alex Hirsekorn

Really? It is my understanding that we were enduring these glowingly
written yet thinly veiled infomercials for Raymarine and Nordhavn because
they are the financial sponsors of Georg's trip. Am I missing something? I
don't mind because the rest of the story is interesting, but I think it he
needs to be upfront about his financial ties.

Right on, Rick! If Georgs was bemoaning the complexity of the Nordhavn and
all of the electronics, do you think that he'd be invited the next time that
either of these companies had a promotional outing? I can read the headlines
now: "Give me an old hand-made Diesel Duck, and a $100 GPS, and I'll show
those sissies what passagemaking is all about!" <grin> I wonder how much $$$
and time was sunk into this project to make sure that it would go off
without a hitch.
This trip is great in that it shows that using the proper gear on a
showroom-floor boat can take you anywhere that you want to go. The bad part
is that it implies you need a 1/2 million dollar trawler to do it. Sure, I'd
take a top-of-the-line Lexus over a hand-built dune buggy for a
cross-country trip, but both will get me to the same destination. One
requires years of hard work to earn, and has monstrously high maintenance
bills, and the other needs to be crawled under occasionally with a crescent
wrench. If we write off our dreams because the "big boys" tell us that
without all of the gear that they have, leaving would be foolhardy, then
where would we be?
One of the great lessons that I've learned from this list is trying to keep
a grip on simplicity over gadgetry. As an absolutely unrepentant gear-head,
it doesn't come easy!
