Some 60 fishing boats have been hired along the Alabama Gulf Coast to set

different barricades to protect the shores of this state. Unfortunately, the
wooden pilings that were set to hold some booms have been knocked down by
currents so other means of support are being put in place. So far, the slick
has moved west of the Alabama coast towards Louisiana. BP has decided that
burning the slick is a better way to contain the oil than trying to gather it
up. I have seen no information regarding if or how the barricades are being
marked so travelling at night could be very hazardous! Staying inside on the
ICW should be OK but beware as you enter Mobile Bay as there is no indication
posted as to the the position of the double rows of booms being used to create
the safety and cleaning basin at the opening to Mobile Bay.

The

following is a new site for information concerning the oil slick in the Gulf
of Mexico.

The Salty Southeast Cruisers' Net has just established a

special "Gulf Oil Slick" section, to help keep the cruising community up to
date on all the latest news concerning this impending disaster. Visitors can
access this new section by going to http://www.CruisersNet.net, scroll down a
bit, and then click on the red, "Special Coverage" button, at the bottom of
the home page's features box.
