When we get back into the ocean, our plan is to rid ourselves of the
"monster" a 13 inch CRT television and procure a flat panel lcd, either tv
or just monitor. The distinction between those two is getting smaller every
day now. We're hoping to have a 19' monitor which can be driven by ships
instruments, satellite feed and the ships computer. Because we're always
looking for more space, we're planning on suspending the thing from the
overhead. When underway the computer and instruments can be displayed, when
in port or at anchor the various other players will be on screen.
We're looking for the one with the size, clarity and most available types of
inputs. They all seem to take little power anymore and we will drive it
with a small "clean" inverter at the source when required. Did everyone
know that most computer UPS's have an inverter resident in the unit?
Type 170mp on your browser. Or 150mp for a 15" monitor. It's made by Samsung. We've had a 150 on Rollsdoc for 6 years. It runs directly from the 12 volt house bank. Threw away the transformer. We use it for the computer, sat TV, cable TV and camera monitors. Bet someone will say You can't run it direct from 12 volt but works for me.

I also have the Samsung SyncMaster 150mp and used it while I lived aboard
for over two years. Now that I am land based, I use it for my desk computer
monitor. I can push a button and watch the news or whatever while at my
desk. On the boat, I used the wireless blue tooth keyboard and mouse. It
was great not having wires to deal with and along with satellite TV, what
else could you want? I had dsl internet at the dock...too bad they started
free wifi as I was leaving.
I keep thinking this 15" will die and I can upgrade to a larger screen, but
it still works super after 5 years...so I guess I will hang in there with
it.

We lived aboard our 34 Marine Trader for 6 weeks this past winter. We wanted a flat screen TV, (cable hookup on the dock) that wouldn't take much space. For $100 I bought a unit at the electronic store ( Circuit City, Best Buy) that turned our laptop into a great TV. Excellent picture, takes no extra room, even has a remote, and time delay features I don't know how to use. Very happy with it.
