Yesterday was horrible weather with no migrating Whimbrels. You'd
think today, with nicer weather, especially in the early morning, with
all those birds out there somewhere would be productive.
But all we got was a total of 39. The little flock behaved like small
flocks often do, circling back and forth looking to land or looking for
stragglers to swell the ranks. I want to thank the folks who came out
today as I had to be absent for a couple of hours. Hughie McNeil gets
the gold star for hanging out at the point in his shorts.
Our Grand Total since we started on May 18th is 1799.
Tomorrow is the Park's Bird Festival. There will be a big willing
audience but I haven't heard from the folks down in Machipongo if there
are any Whimbrels set to go or even if there is still a big bunch in the
marshes. Just make sure if you do come out to the Festival that you
visit Whimbrel Point either as part of a guided bird walk or just come
yourself. Starting around 5:30 am we will be at the Southernmost tip of
the park where the minks come out to frolic and the Whimbrels come
streaming by. There will be experts there to answer all your questions
about Whimbrels, birds in general, and all the philosophical stuff we
talk about when we're waiting for ...
Whimbrels.
Good Birding
