I was surprized it took so long for someone to mention that simple
expedient, the emergency tiller. My 1978, 34' Marine Trader Europa Sedan has
one. I'd hate to have to dock the craft with me at the tiller and my wife at
the engine controls, but we could get close enough to throw a line to
someone ashore.

You and other listees might be interested in what we're doing on the
new Nordhavn
for backup steering.  we're adding a second steering cylinder to the
steering arm,
with a separate reservoir and autopilot pump.

Russ, I will be installing the ultimate, low tech, maintenance free,
inexpensive, fail proof emergency steering system on my boat.  It is
called an emergency tiller.  There is a deck plate in the aft cockpit
that accesses the top of the rudder post.  The emergency tiller mates to
a key way on the top of the rudder post.  No muss, no fuss.

Old sail boaters never die........they just lose the wind in their sails.
