Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsWe have navigated the new dredged 14 foot channel North Bimini last
Saturday. The old channel is still accessible and can be used. Today, Valentine's Day
(!), we watched power and sailing vessels come and go in gusty 15+ knot
winds with a heavy surge through the new channel. It is marked with 5 buoys: 2
red nuns (there were 3 originally) and 3 green cans. There is no entrance mark,
but the coordinates are N25 42.65' W079 18.46' ; stay in the centre; reds
right entering. Info is available on the Explorer Chart website re this and
other updates. (PLEASE NOTE: On our way out, Feb 15, an outer green can had
moved to join the second green can within 50-75 feet! There were still 2 good
red, and 2 good green positions as of that date.)
For local VHF guidance, the Good Samaritans are at 'Ricky J' on Channel 16.
As there is no BoatUS or SeaTow, they can also connect you with a local tow
operator should misfortune befall you! Brown's Marina is gone and a new one is
under construction; the others are as listed in the guides.
While you are here, visit the art program at the public school (first two
classrooms nearest the road; talk to James Pinder the teacher; and, if so
inclined offer a donation to help with their supplies - or bring 'acrylic paints'.
They never have enough - and the kids are so talented!
Happy
Valentine's Day (albeit this message will get out late!)
