What would be the best horsepower outboard for the following RIB?

 Caribe 12 + motor + fuel + miscellaneous = 350 - 400 lbs.

Desired top end perofrmance is to be able to plane with 4 - 5 adults aboard.

We're torn between 15 HP (just adequate?) and 25 HP but have no experience or
unbiased reference material to consult.

I don't think many dinghies will be able to plane 4
adults on 15 hp.  If this is your plan, be sure to
"try before you buy", with the full load you intend to
carry.  I think your real choice is between the 25 and
30 hp motors.

Not wishing to disrespect Mark's comments, I have a 15 hp OMC on a 10'6"
Zodiac dinghy. It planes easily with three adults (I refuse to say just how
much at least one of them weighs, suffice to say that I exceed the standard
FAA 170 lb male profile!) and five 25-30 lb dogs! I've got the photos that
prove it. Actually can't go WOT even with the full load I just described -
it gets too hairy.

What's all this mean? Just as Mark suggests, "Try before you buy".

Regards,

John

We're torn between 15 HP (just adequate?) and 25 HP but have no experience

Last fall, we bought  a new 10ft Avon RIB (model 310 as I remember) & a new
Yamaha 15hp 2 stroke. It will plane with the wife & I & a full 6 gal tank of
gas, (I weigh 200lbs & I'm smart enough not to guess her weight, but let's
just say not much over half my weight) but it has to be small people to
plane with even 3 aboard. We don't have the "dolefin" or any of the helper
fins, so I'm sure that would help. Our experience with this would tell me
that with an 11 footer, I would go to at least the 25hp or bigger, which
ever the boat will take. Ours was rated for only the 15hp or I would have
been temped to go bigger on it.

Just our experience.
