John
I have extensive experience doing this both ways.
The short answer is that it can be done because I have done it.
The longer answer is....
Nearly 100% of small and large european appliances tolerate quite
well running at 60 hz. (Have to watch the voltage...)
Most small american appliances tolerate quite well running at 50Hz
Where Ken Williams reports induction motor problems while cruising
Europe, I agree these can be issues.
Therefore, most large american appliances (washers, dryers, ac units)
will not tolerate well running on the lower frequency. They will get
hot.
Unless they are digitally controlled. Some of the high end US and
European appliances are. These are unaffected by the frequency as the
digital electronics seems to do its thing quite well.
If you have the chance you can set up your boat as Arild designed my
new one.
Arild has pointed me to Victron inverters (not charger-inverters)
that can be selected to output either 230/240 VAC, 60Hz or 50 Hz.
Since european appliances do not seem to be bother by 60 hz (except
clocks) one could see benefit of this arrangement.
I am also putting on a 2:1 step down transformer (6 kw, I know big,,
but I had one laying around) and a small 115 vac circuit mostly just
in case.
So, for the small appliances that Admiral must have that are 110VAC,
even though the inverters will be set to 50Hz since that is the
predominate appliance frequency on board, they will be fine. (My
Saeco 110VAC 60 Hz cappuccino machine has been running fine here in
Turkey for 5 years off of 50 hz, 2:1 step down transformer.... knock
on wood.)
If the boat ever comes to America, and the predominate appliances
switch, i have already installed a 60hz solution.
As for shore power, it sole use is to charge the battery bank. All AC
loads are powered directly thru the inverters.
A small 4 kw 240 VAC, 60hz generator (switchable to 3.2 kw, 230 VAC
50hz) solely is used to charge the house bank at anchor.
I can go on and on and can answer many other questions either
directly or privately.
As for Ken Williams propane comment, i have addressed that issue
also, hopefully, quite well. Time will tell.
OK?

Hi All,
I was hoping to get some info on running a US 110v 60hz boats on
230v 50hz shorepower. ....
