Greetings ListMates,

A longtime friend of mine is soon to be the new owner of a 2000 Mainship Pilot 30 that is currently in Stuart, Fl.
The boat looks well-maintained and surveyed and sea-trialed well.

He is toying with the idea of bringing it north to L.I. Sound,  departing late April with his wife. rather than have it loaded on a truck.

Mid-70s; fit and limber; intelligent.
Comfortable in small boats. Occasional recreational sailors (Long Island Sound) with no significant cruising experience.

What do you think of this as a first experience on their new boat?
I’m a bit concerned that it would be a bit of a grind, especially if you hit a week of lousy weather, and could sour them on their new purchase.

What do you think?

Buy a boat, take it to Maine... that's a great idea. Folks can learn along
the way. If they run across something that they don't know, ask, read,
shout for help. Not a big deal, loopers do it every year and they generally
know very little, if anything.
If  they're of the desire, they can hire a delivery captain or hire a
captain to teach locally. I've found that with one week aboard, most folks
are good enough to go ahead and do it on their own, though often they
aren't comfortable until the 2-3 week period. Best time to learn is out
there doing it... but, please, stay downwind of us until that 3 week period
has been reached (grin). "A bit of a grind"? Doesn't have to be unless they
decide to not take it easy. Heck, Jill and I quit routinely, but then after
a good night's sleep, we get up the next morning,or maybe two mornings, and
start doing it again!
