Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsCan anyone tell me if there are any issues for a 5' ft
draft sailboat going from Carabelle to Mobile Bay on
the GICW? I will be there in about a week and have
heard different things regarding hurricane shoaling
etc. First hand accounts please.
Also, from Tarpon Springs I would like to go to Cedar
Keys but it requires a stop in between. Can anyone
advise on a good place to go in, again I draw 5'.
thanks in advance,
Tom
BTW I came through Georgia about 3 weeks ago and if
you draw anything at all you shouldn't be running
around dead low. We had trouble every day. Also, re
the Bridge of Lions, my book is back in the boat (I'm
at the Moore Haven Library) but I recall it being on a
schedule, don't recall what it was. Plenty of room if
I remember, when open.

From Tarpon Springs to Cedar Keys you can go into: Hudson, Hernando
Beach, Bayport (once was a major port 1840's - no services now --
just a place to shelter), Homosassa, Crystal River, Inglis (but you
might as well go to Cedar Keys if you make it that far). Hudson,
Hernando Beach, Bayport: only go in on the high tide, use the old WWI
bird rack markers 5 miles out as your first marker in, if you don't
have 9 feet to start, don't go in and don't go in at dark under any
circumstances, winding channel, flats are dry on winter tides.
Personally, I wouldn't go into Crystal River or Inglis at night either.

About this time (May) a year ago, we ran from Mobile to Port St Joe, mostly in
the ICW.
We draw 3 feet of water. We never encountered any shallow places.
We did find shallow water in the channel coming in Government Cut from
offshore, it stayed shallow all way across the Bay, into Apalachicola River.
By shallow, it was around 6-7 feet.

You need to have good weather, but when we went from Carabelle to Tarpon
Springs, we just anchored about 10 miles out in the Gulf in 14 feet of
water. We headed toward Steinhatchee, then about 30 miles out we headed
south toward Tarpon with the intent of doing an all nighter. We found so
many traps that we decided to just anchor out. Had a breeze come up for a
couple of hours around midnight, but otherwise it was a normal anchorage,
except for being 10 miles out in the Gulf.

Agree that is the safe bet (in good weather). They don't call this
area (Hudson-Hernando Beach-Bayport) "the Devil's rock garden" for
nothing.
